WAS THE CHURCH BUILT ON PETER

Jesus asked; “Who do people say  I am?” Pater answered: “You are the  Christ, the son of the living God.”  Jesus blessed him for his correct  answer and added: “You are Peter,  and on this rock I will build my church.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom  of heaven…” (Matt 16:15-19)

If you read this in the original Greek  Bible, it would say: “You are petros  (masculine, a small stone), and upon  the rock (petra, feminine, a huge  ledge of rock) I will build my church.”  Christ was not founding His church  on Peter (an unstable little stone), but  upon the great solid rock foundation of  truth that Peter confessed, that Jesus  “is the Christ, the Son of the living  God!” The Lord gave Peter the keys  to open the door in establishing the  church of Christ on that memorable  day, giving him the “keys of the  kingdom.” In Peter’s great sermon  in Acts 2, he told convicted believers:  “Repent and be baptized so that your  sins may be forgiven.” Jesus is the  foundation, not Peter (I Cor 3:11).
